Show Notes

In this inaugural episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses the makeup of the Hebrew canon – also called the Tanakh which is often called the Torah, Prophets and Writing. Tanakh is an acronym for Torah, Naavim, Ketuvim in Hebrew

The Hebrew Bible – called the “Old Testament” by Christians – IS the Bible of the New Testament. It IS the only Bible that Jesus or his disciples ever knew. The Tanakh is God’s planter box: Torah, Prophets, Writings and each must comport, or at least can’t contradict. This is a problem for the New Testament, Islam and other religions

The Hebrew Bible starts with Instruction but ends in Wisdom. We are planets apart socially, culturally, in every way, not just millennia – so some parts simply will not transplant to us directly. But if you don’t know Tanakh – in all its horror and gore – then how can you even began to understand Christianity, Islam or the important influence of the Bible, particularly the Hebrew Bible, in the West?

The Hebrew Bible that we are so used to is in reality very subversive even after all this time. We let it speak and then decide how to act. Deuteronomy 30:15 puts it this way: “I set before you life and death. Choose life”. The choice is ours. Hate it, love it, embrace it, despise it – choose. We choose our fate. When it says what contradicts our cherished religions, cherished ideologies, or cherished practices…that is how it is subversive. It undermines our assumptions, inferences and way of being if we let it. And then we get to decide.

Lastly, we discuss the purpose of The Subversive Scribe and giving you the tools to understand your chains, escape them and to subvert the lies on the lips of the priests. To understand the text in its context and see through the stories of the storytellers meant to weave you into their way of thinking about the world. Until next time, my name is Hesh and I am your subversive scribe telling you to stay subversive.

Episode 7 - What Is Biblical Studies?

In this seventh episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses the difference between studying the Bible and Biblical Studies, the academic discipline. Studying the bible is not the same as Biblical Studies though the bible is certainly the object of study in both. Biblical Studies is usually a field associated with private academic study such as a Jewish or Christian university. It is the academic approach to the Bible. We discuss several areas of academic study and that the field requires discipline, rigor and hard work to grasp effectively. We discuss job prospects and methods and also look at examples of “biblical studies” in the Bible where various books make reference to earlier books and texts. We discuss some academic programs and academic areas of study including Textual Criticism; Source; Form/Tradition History; Redaction; Canonical; Rhetorical; Narrative; Psychological; Social-Scientific; Post-Modern; Feminist; Masculinist; Post-Colonial, Liberationist; and many more. Lastly, we close with a personal experience of Biblical Studies and how that resulted in The Subversive Scribe podcast. Like the show? Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss any future episodes. Episode 2 - Things Mean Things: Hermeneutics

In this second episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses hermeneutics which is the art and science of interpretation. One of the main maxims of a solid hermeneutical foundation is the simple and sensible notion that however one interprets…it cannot mean to us what it did not mean to the original recipients and audience. This can be done if we follow a sound hermeneutical approach. We also discuss five “rules” that will guide anyone in interpreting, though there are many more. Hermeneutics is so important to understand and practice because it will keep us away from false theological conclusions and keep us within the boundaries of the sacred text itself. What we believe has consequences because what we believe leads to actions that we take. If one does not take care to interpret correctly one can end in a very dangerous place intellectually, socially and spiritually. If you don’t built it right from the start, you can get off track very, very quickly and end up with something that looks vastly different from where the text started. Until next time stay subversive. Like the show? Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss any future episodes. Episode 8 - What Is A Messiah Anyway?

In this eighth episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses what the word messiah means, what a messiah does and the multiple places that the word appears in the Hebrew Bible. In the Tanakh we have several examples of both people and items that are “moshiach’d” or anointed. It is a commission for a sacred purpose. There are approximately 39 instances in the Hebrew Bible of the word messiah, including even a foreign pagan king, Cyrus the Persian. We discuss this in depth throughout the episode. We also discuss what the purpose and function of any anointed person and what they are tasked with doing. Will there be a messiah in the future? There are Hebrew Bible verses that are at least READ to indicate that this will be so but there are not as many biblical indicators about this – clear prophecies in a straight forward plain sense way – than what people say there are and some are taken as prophecies that could apply to anyone.
